Start with the space you have

Raised beds, rows or pots — drawn to their real size.

Tell it what you grow in — a raised bed, the ground, a pot, a hanging basket, a shelf or a hydroponic setup — and type its size. It appears on screen, ready to plant. North and south are marked, so tall plants don’t shade the small ones.

  • Square Foot — a few plants per square, packed for the most food.
  • Grid — one plant per square, for free-form planning.
  • Row Garden — tap a row to fill it. It works out how many fit from each plant’s real spacing.
  • Pots — set the size in gallons. Under 4 gallons holds 1 plant, 4–9 holds 2, 10 or more holds 4.

Spacing, solved

Carrots fit 16 to a square. A tomato takes four.

Every plant already knows how much room it needs. Tap a square and the right number goes in — no seed packet maths, no measuring tape.

Planting too close is the most common beginner mistake. Here, it simply can’t happen.

🍅

Big plants take more. One tomato gets a 2×2 block — four squares — so it has room to grow.

Good neighbours

See who should grow next to whom — before you plant.

Pick a plant and the bed lights up. Plants that help it get a green outline. Plants that should stay away get an amber outline.

On Pro, if two plants that clash end up within about four squares of each other, both start pulsing red and a note tells you why.

Onion and Beans are too close. Onions hold back bean growth — move one of them further away. Pro

What is it worth?

Know what your bed is worth before you plant it.

As you plant, the designer adds up what your harvest would cost at the shop. The crops that earn the most per square get a 💰 badge, so small beds can make the most of every inch.

Prices show in your own currency — $, £, ₹, CA$ or A$ — and you can nudge them up or down to match your local shops.

Plan with last season right beside you.

While you plan a bed, a panel shows what happened there before: the crop that did best, the pest that keeps coming back, and a warning if you’re about to plant the same family in the same spot.

Nobody remembers all that. Your garden does it for you.

Guide

Garden Designer, how do I…?

Short answers. Tap a question.

How do I add a bed? +
Open My Garden and tap Add Bed. Give it a name, type the length and width in feet, and pick a layout: Square Foot, Grid or Row Garden. For a pot, choose a container and set its size in gallons.
How do I place a plant? +
Pick a plant from the list on the left (on a phone, tap the + button). Then tap a square. The number on the square shows how many fit there.
How do I fill lots of squares at once? +
Pick the plant, then press and drag across the squares. Every square you pass over gets planted.
How do I remove a plant? +
Tap a planted square to clear it, or tap the small × on the plant.
How do I find where a plant is in my bed? +
Below the bed is a chip for every plant, like “18 Spinach”. Tap a chip and every square with that plant lights up. Tap it again to clear.
How do I only see plants that grow now? +
Switch on In Season for My Zone above the plant list. You can also filter by Light (sun or shade) and Level (easy to hard).
How do I copy a bed? +
On the bed card in My Garden, tap Duplicate. You get the same layout, ready for a new bed or a new season.
My plants are already in the ground. What now? +
Place them and tap Save — the app uses today as the planting day. Then open the plant on the Planting Calendar and tap Correct Date. Every later date moves with it.
How do I choose a variety, like Cherry tomato? Pro +
Pick the plant, then choose its variety before you tap the square. Each variety is tracked on its own, so you learn which one did best.
How do I fit more (or fewer) plants in a square? Pro +
Tap the sliders button next to a plant in the list, find Spacing — this bed only, type a number and tap Save for this bed. Handy for a trellised tomato or a tight row of onions.
How do I let the AI fill the bed for me? Pro +
Tap AI Auto Plan at the top. Choose the month, a style (Balanced, Maximum Yield, Low Maintenance or Companion Focused) and how many crops you want. Check the plan, then save. More about the AI Garden Planner →
How do I share or print my bed? Pro +
Tap Share to get a link anyone can open — no account needed. Tap Print to save the layout as a PDF.

FAQ

Questions, answered

What is square-foot gardening?
You split a bed into 1-foot squares and plant a set number in each — 16 carrots, 9 spinach, 4 lettuce, or 1 pepper. Big plants like tomatoes take a 2×2 block. It packs more food into a small space, and the designer does all the maths.
What happens when I press Save?
The first time, you choose Active Tracking or Layout Only. Active Tracking puts every plant on your Planting Calendar and in My Plants, and adds watering, feeding and picking jobs to your To-Do List. Layout Only just remembers what is planted where. You can’t switch later, so pick Active Tracking if you’re unsure.
How many beds can I make for free?
Two garden beds on the free plan, with every layout type. Pro gives you unlimited beds.
Where does the grocery value come from?
Each plant has an expected harvest and a shop price. The designer multiplies them and adds them up. It is an estimate, shown with a “~”, in your own currency ($, £, ₹, CA$ or A$). You can set your local prices higher or lower in Settings.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes. It works in any browser on phone, tablet or computer, and there is an Android app on Google Play.
